Star Trek Insurrection: Hype Sinks

When we first saw the trailer for this, all my friends went nuts.
"This is gonna be the coolest thing ever," they said, at least the
ones whose moms let them bring the phone down to their basement
"apartments" after 11:00 p.m. on a work day. I took the afternoon
off from work to go see the movie by myself, so I wouldn't have to
walk into the theater with those guys in their damn costumes and
t-shirts. I'm a Star Trek fan, but frankly I think the hype was way
overdone and the movie just plain sucked. First, R2-D2 and C3-PO
were nowhere to be found. So much for continuity. I thought the
idea was to show where Darth Vader came from, but aside from the
android character going a bit nuts, I don't see how any of the whiny
characters foreshadowed anything about the Dark Side of the Force.
This "Picard" character did try to use the Force once, but it seemed
he was just trying to impress some "alien" chick. You gotta wonder
what happened to the alien creature effects, though, because the
chick looked pretty human to me. The merchandizing opportunities
look weak. They really only used this one ship, the "Enterprise" or
something, and they ejected its engine at the first sign of trouble.
Now the Millennium Falcon, *that* was a spaceship! So, all this
waiting for the new movie was wasted. This crap looked more like a
TV show! Though I must admit it was better than that last movie in
the Trilogy, Empire Records.
