{"id":236,"date":"2007-02-16T12:58:00","date_gmt":"2007-02-16T20:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.netjeff.com\/wp\/?p=236"},"modified":"2007-02-16T12:58:00","modified_gmt":"2007-02-16T20:58:00","slug":"navigating-a-set-of-photos-in-3d","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.netjeff.com\/wp\/?p=236","title":{"rendered":"Navigating a set of photos in 3D"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Suppose you have a lot of photos all with the same object in them, or photos from the same area.&nbsp; Navigating the photos as thumbnails doesn't work very well when you have more than a handful of photos.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/phototour.cs.washington.edu\/\">Univ of Washington team<\/a> has a demonstration of a system for navigating the photos in 3D.&nbsp; The system computes the relationship between the camera position among all the photos, then allows you to \"zoom in\" on the object by finding another photo that is closer.&nbsp; Or it allows you to \"circle around\" an object by finding photos to the left and right.<\/p>\n<p>This system does not attempt to stitch photos into seamless panorama, nor does it attempt to build a complete virtual 3D world.&nbsp; But the effect is almost that good.<\/p>\n<p>They've produced a <a href=\"http:\/\/uwnews.washington.edu\/ni\/article.asp?articleID=30518\"><b>5 minute video<\/b><\/a> demonstrating their system (Flash).&nbsp; Scroll down on the page for a description of the system.&nbsp; You You can also get all the details on the <a href=\"http:\/\/phototour.cs.washington.edu\/\">team's main project page<\/a>. &nbsp; Microsoft Research has some <a href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/IVM\/PhotoTours\/\">beta software<\/a> based on the UW research (I haven't tried it out yet).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Suppose you have a lot of photos all with the same object in them, or photos from the same area.&nbsp; Navigating the photos as thumbnails doesn't work very well when you have more than a handful of photos.
