{"id":221,"date":"2007-02-09T09:24:00","date_gmt":"2007-02-09T17:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.netjeff.com\/wp\/?p=221"},"modified":"2007-02-09T09:24:00","modified_gmt":"2007-02-09T17:24:00","slug":"drm-is-the-same-as-perpetual-motion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.netjeff.com\/wp\/?p=221","title":{"rendered":"DRM is the same as perpetual motion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There's lots of discussion about whether <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Digital_Rights_Management\">DRM<\/a> (Digital Restrictions Management) is a good thing or a bad thing.&nbsp; But most of the debate assumes that the idea of DRM is actually possible.&nbsp; In <a href=\"http:\/\/slashdot.org\/comments.pl?sid=221484&amp;cid=17947040\">this<\/a> Slashdot posting, Eustace Tilly summarized the fundamental fallacy of DRM (my emphasis added):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><i>[DRM relies on cryptography, and] <\/i>cryptography is designed so that a message from A can be read by B but not by C. With DRM, B and C are the same person.&nbsp; The message from A (the publisher) must be readable by B (the consumer) but not by C (the consumer).<\/p>\n<p>I hope you understand now why DRM is a concept flawed in its fundamentals.<\/p>\n<p><b>DRM would be useful.
